Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the word jihad mean literally?
Model answer
Jihad means struggle or striving in the way of God. The word does not mean holy war.
- 2
What is greater jihad?
Model answer
Greater jihad is the inner struggle to live as God commands. Prayer, honesty and resisting temptation all belong to it.
- 3
What is lesser jihad?
Model answer
Lesser jihad is the outward struggle, which can include armed defence of the community. Strict conditions limit when it is permitted.
- 4
Where does the distinction between greater and lesser jihad come from?
Model answer
The distinction rests on a saying attributed to Muhammad on returning from battle. Many hadith scholars classify that report as weak, though the teaching is widely used.
- 5
Name three conditions for a lesser jihad to be declared.
Model answer
A lesser jihad must be declared by a proper religious authority. Fighting must be in defence, and it must stop once the enemy seeks peace.
- 6
Name two things Muslim teaching forbids even during a lesser jihad.
Model answer
Muslim teaching forbids harming civilians, women, children and the elderly. Destruction of trees, crops and places of worship is also forbidden.
