Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the creation account in Genesis suggest about the status of women?
Model answer
Genesis 1:27 states that God created humanity in his image, male and female. Many Christians read the verse as teaching that women and men are equal before God.
- 2
Which biblical verse is used to argue that women should not lead in church?
Model answer
1 Timothy 2:12 says that the writer does not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. Scholars dispute both the authorship of the letter and how the verse should apply today.
- 3
Which women in the New Testament held positions of responsibility?
Model answer
Paul calls Phoebe a deacon of the church (Romans 16:1). Junia is described as outstanding among the apostles (Romans 16:7), though the reading of her name has been disputed.
- 4
When did the Church of England first ordain women as priests and as bishops?
Model answer
The Church of England ordained its first women priests in 1994. Libby Lane became its first woman bishop in January 2015.
- 5
Why does the Roman Catholic Church ordain only men?
Model answer
Catholic teaching holds that Jesus chose twelve men as apostles and that a priest acts in the person of Christ. The Church states that it has no authority to ordain women.
- 6
Give one argument used by Christians who support the ordination of women.
Model answer
Galatians 3:28 states that male and female are one in Christ, which supports equal ministry. Women were the first witnesses of the resurrection in all four Gospels.
