Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a sacrament?
Model answer
A sacrament is an outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace. Christians believe God acts through the physical sign.
- 2
How many sacraments do Catholic and Orthodox Christians recognise?
Model answer
Catholic and Orthodox Christians recognise seven sacraments. The seven include baptism, confirmation, the eucharist, marriage and ordination.
- 3
Which two sacraments do most Protestant churches accept, and why?
Model answer
Most Protestant churches accept baptism and Holy Communion. Reformers argued that only these two were clearly commanded by Jesus in the Gospels.
- 4
Which Christian groups reject outward sacraments altogether?
Model answer
Quakers and the Salvation Army use no outward sacraments. Quaker and Salvationist teaching says the whole of life can be sacramental without ritual signs.
- 5
Define baptism.
Model answer
Baptism is the sacrament of initiation that uses water to welcome someone into the Church. Water symbolises washing away sin and beginning a new life.
- 6
What is infant baptism?
Model answer
Infant baptism is the baptism of a baby, usually by pouring water over the head. Parents and godparents make promises on the child's behalf.
