- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
The subtopic covers homophobia, the biblical texts and arguments on both sides, Catholic teaching and the 2023 decision on blessings, the Church of England and other groups, UK law, Muslim views, religious freedom, and humanist views.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define homophobia.
Which biblical verses are quoted by Christians who teach that same-sex sexual acts are wrong?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define homophobia.
Model answer
Homophobia is prejudice or hostility towards people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual. Homophobic abuse and violence are treated as hate crimes in English law.
- 2
Which biblical verses are quoted by Christians who teach that same-sex sexual acts are wrong?
Model answer
Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:26-27 are the verses most often cited. Critics reply that these passages address a social setting very different from a modern relationship.
- 3
Which arguments do Christians who affirm same-sex relationships use?
Model answer
Jesus said nothing about homosexuality in any of the Gospels. The command to love your neighbour is treated as the guiding principle instead.
- 4
What is the Roman Catholic teaching on homosexuality?
Model answer
The Catechism calls homosexual acts intrinsically disordered, while requiring that gay people be treated with respect and compassion. Catholic teaching calls homosexual people to live chastely.
- 5
What did the Vatican decide about blessings for same-sex couples in 2023?
Model answer
A Vatican declaration in December 2023 allowed priests to give informal blessings to people in same-sex couples. Catholic teaching that marriage is between a man and a woman was left unchanged.
- 6
What is the position of the Church of England on same-sex marriage?
Model answer
The Church of England does not conduct same-sex marriages. The law that introduced same-sex marriage specifically prevents it from doing so. Prayers of blessing for same-sex couples were approved for use from December 2023.
