A formal prayer uses words that are set down and learned by heart. The Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be are examples.

Formal prayers carry the wisdom of the whole Church and unite everyone who prays them. Set words also help when someone is too distressed to find their own.
- 6

Model answer
Informal prayer is personal and honest rather than repeated out of habit. Jesus warned against heaping up empty phrases in Matthew 6:7.
