- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
The subtopic covers the epileptic boy and his father's cry of belief and unbelief, the woman with a haemorrhage, the widow's offering and the anointing at Bethany, and what faith means in Mark, with differing Christian views of its nature and importance.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the condition of the boy brought to Jesus after the transfiguration, as Mark reports it.
What did the father of the boy with a spirit say to Jesus?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was happening when Jesus came down from the transfiguration?
Model answer
A crowd had gathered and the teachers of the law were arguing with the disciples. A man had brought his son, whom the disciples could not help.
- 2
Describe the boy's condition as Mark reports it.
Model answer
Mark describes a spirit that robbed the boy of speech and threw him to the ground, so that he foamed at the mouth and became rigid. Many readers today recognise a description of epilepsy.
- 3
What did the father say to Jesus?
Model answer
The father said, "If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." Jesus answered that everything is possible for one who believes.
- 4
Quote the father's famous reply.
Model answer
The father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" The words are often used by Christians as an honest prayer.
- 5
Why could the disciples not drive the spirit out?
Model answer
Jesus told them privately that this kind can come out only by prayer. The failure is presented as a failure of dependence on God.
- 6
Who was the woman with a haemorrhage?
Model answer
A woman had been bleeding for twelve years and had spent all she had on doctors without improvement. The condition also made her ritually unclean.
