Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    How does Mark's gospel begin?

    Model answer

Mark opens at 1:1 with "The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God". Mark includes no birth narrative at all.

  2. 2

Who does Mark say was prophesied to prepare the way?

    Model answer

Mark 1:2-3 quotes the prophets about a messenger sent ahead and a voice calling in the wilderness. Christians read the prophecy as pointing to John the Baptist.

  3. 3

Describe John the Baptist as Mark presents him.

    Model answer

John lived in the wilderness and wore camel's hair with a leather belt. John ate locusts and wild honey, and preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  4. 4

What did John say about the one coming after him?

    Model answer

John said someone more powerful was coming, whose sandals he was not worthy to untie. John baptised with water, but that person would baptise with the Holy Spirit.

  5. 5

What happened at Jesus' baptism in Mark 1:9-11?

    Model answer

Jesus was baptised by John in the Jordan, and as he came out of the water the heavens were torn open and the Spirit descended like a dove. A voice from heaven said, "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

  6. 6

Why do Christians see the baptism as the start of Jesus' ministry?

    Model answer

The baptism is the first public moment of Jesus' adult life in Mark. God's declaration and the gift of the Spirit mark him out for the work that follows.
