Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why were people with leprosy excluded in first-century Judaea?
Model answer
Skin disease made a person ritually unclean and they had to live apart from the community. Touching such a person was believed to pass the uncleanness on.
- 2
What happened when the man with leprosy came to Jesus?
Model answer
The man knelt and said, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus was filled with compassion, reached out his hand and touched him.
- 3
Why is Jesus touching the man significant?
Model answer
Touching a person with leprosy would normally make Jesus unclean. Mark instead shows the man made clean, so the direction of the contact is reversed.
- 4
What did Jesus tell the healed man to do?
Model answer
Jesus sent him to show himself to the priest and make the offering Moses commanded. Jesus also told him to say nothing to anyone, and the man told everyone.
- 5
Who was Levi and why was his job resented?
Model answer
Levi was a tax collector sitting at his booth. Tax collectors worked for the Roman occupation and were widely regarded as traitors and cheats.
- 6
What did Jesus say to Levi, and what followed?
Model answer
Jesus said, "Follow me," and Levi got up and followed him. Jesus then ate at his house with many tax collectors and sinners.
