Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define mission.
Model answer
Mission is the Church's task of continuing the work of Christ in the world. Mission includes preaching, service, healing and working for justice.
- 2
Define evangelism.
Model answer
Evangelism is sharing the good news of Jesus so that others may come to believe. The word comes from the Greek for good news.
- 3
Which command of Jesus do Catholics call the Great Commission?
Model answer
Matthew 28:19-20 commands the disciples to make disciples of all nations. Catholics treat the verse as the origin of the Church's mission.
- 4
What did Pope Francis mean by calling Catholics missionary disciples?
Model answer
Evangelii Gaudium teaches that every baptised person shares in the Church's mission. Catholics are called to share their faith rather than leave it to the clergy.
- 5
What is the new evangelisation?
Model answer
The new evangelisation aims to reawaken faith in countries that were once strongly Christian. Pope John Paul II used the phrase to describe that work in Europe.
- 6
Give one way Catholics evangelise locally in Great Britain.
Model answer
Parishes run courses such as the RCIA for adults who want to join the Church. Schools, youth groups and street outreach also share the faith.
