Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the five precepts?
Model answer
The five precepts are the basic moral undertakings of a lay Buddhist. Buddhists promise to keep them rather than receive them as commands from a god.
- 2
State the first precept and give one consequence of it.
Model answer
The first precept is to abstain from taking life. Many Buddhists are vegetarian and refuse work that involves killing.
- 3
State the second precept.
Model answer
The second precept is to abstain from taking what is not given. Theft, cheating and exploitation are all ruled out.
- 4
State the third precept.
Model answer
The third precept is to abstain from misusing the senses. The Pali text refers particularly to sexual misconduct.
- 5
State the fourth precept.
Model answer
The fourth precept is to abstain from false speech. Lies, slander and deliberate exaggeration all break it.
- 6
State the fifth precept and explain the reason for it.
Model answer
The fifth precept is to abstain from intoxicants that cloud the mind. A clouded mind cannot keep the other precepts or meditate well.
