Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define capital punishment.

    Model answer

Capital punishment is the death penalty, the execution of a person as a punishment for a crime. Only the state can carry out an execution. Belarus is the only country in Europe that still carries out executions.

  2. 2

When was the death penalty abolished in the United Kingdom?

    Model answer

Parliament suspended the death penalty for murder in Great Britain in 1965 and abolished it in 1969. Northern Ireland followed in 1973. The last remaining offences, including treason, lost the death penalty in 1998.

  3. 3

Which biblical verses are used to support capital punishment?

    Model answer

Genesis 9:6 states that whoever sheds human blood shall have their own blood shed by humans. Exodus 21:23 sets out a life for a life as a principle of justice.

  4. 4

What does Romans 13 say about the authority of the state to punish?

    Model answer

Paul wrote that rulers are established by God and do not bear the sword for nothing (Romans 13:4). Some Christians read that verse as permitting the state to execute criminals.

  5. 5

Which Christian teachings are used against capital punishment?

    Model answer

Life is sacred because human beings are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Jesus taught forgiveness and stopped the stoning of a woman brought to him for punishment.

  6. 6

What is the current Roman Catholic teaching on the death penalty?

    Model answer

The Catechism was revised in 2018 to state that the death penalty is inadmissible. Pope Francis taught that execution attacks the dignity of the person, and the Church works for abolition worldwide.
