Jihad means to struggle or to strive in the way of Allah. The word does not mean holy war in itself.

Greater jihad is the inner struggle to live as a good Muslim and resist temptation. Lesser jihad is the outward struggle, which can include fighting in defence of Islam.

Why do scholars say that jihad is often misunderstood?
Model answer
Most Muslims use the word for personal struggle such as prayer, fasting and study. Popular use of the word for terrorism does not match Islamic teaching.
