Science, atheism and humanism
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Students learn atheism, agnosticism, humanism and theism, how the Big Bang and evolution are used against belief, religious replies, believing scientists, Richard Dawkins, the burden of proof, and humanist sources of meaning.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define agnosticism.
Define humanism.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define atheism.
Model answer
Atheism is the belief that no god exists. An atheist rejects the claim that a god created or governs the universe.
- 2
Define agnosticism.
Model answer
Agnosticism is the view that nobody can know whether a god exists. An agnostic neither affirms nor denies belief in God.
- 3
Define humanism.
Model answer
Humanism is a non-religious approach to life based on reason, evidence and human welfare. Humanists look to science and shared values rather than to scripture.
- 4
What is theism?
Model answer
Theism is belief in a god or gods who created the universe and remain involved with it. Christianity, Islam and Judaism are theistic religions.
- 5
How is the Big Bang used as an argument against God?
Model answer
Critics argue that the Big Bang explains the start of the universe with no need for a creator. Physics rather than God does the explaining on that view.
- 6
How is evolution used as an argument against God?
Model answer
Evolution explains the complexity of living things without a designer. A direct creation of each species then becomes unnecessary.
