Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which Hindu belief underpins concern for the environment?
Model answer
Ahimsa teaches Hindus to avoid harming any living thing. Hindus also treat the earth as a form of the divine, called Bhumi Devi.
- 2
How does belief in rebirth affect Hindu attitudes to animals?
Model answer
Hindus believe the atman can be reborn in animal as well as human bodies. Animals are therefore owed respect rather than treated as mere resources.
- 3
What is meant by cow protection?
Model answer
Cow protection is the practice of caring for cows for their whole natural lives. Hindus who keep the practice will not send a cow for slaughter.
- 4
What is a goshala?
Model answer
A goshala is a shelter where cows are cared for until they die naturally. Many Hindu temples and communities in India run one.
- 5
Why is the cow especially honoured in Hinduism?
Model answer
The cow gives milk without being harmed and is treated as a mother figure. Cow protection therefore stands as a symbol of ahimsa and selfless giving.
- 6
Give a British example of Hindu cow protection.
Model answer
Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire keeps a herd of cows and oxen that are never slaughtered. The farm supplies milk used in temple worship.
