Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a pilgrimage?
Model answer
A pilgrimage is a journey made to a holy place for religious reasons. Catholics go on pilgrimage to pray, to do penance or to ask for healing.
- 2
Where is Lourdes and why is it a place of pilgrimage?
Model answer
Lourdes is a town in south-west France. Bernadette Soubirous reported eighteen visions of the Virgin Mary there in 1858.
- 3
What happens at the Grotto of Massabielle?
Model answer
Pilgrims pray at the grotto where Bernadette said Mary appeared. A spring uncovered there supplies the water used for drinking and bathing.
- 4
Name two things pilgrims do at Lourdes.
Model answer
Pilgrims attend Mass at the underground basilica and join the evening torchlight procession. Many also help sick pilgrims to and from the baths.
- 5
Why does Lourdes especially attract sick and disabled pilgrims?
Model answer
Catholics associate Lourdes with healing after a number of cures were declared miraculous. Volunteers travel with sick pilgrims to care for them during the visit.
- 6
Give one reason a Catholic might value pilgrimage.
Model answer
A pilgrimage sets time aside from ordinary life to focus on God. Many pilgrims return with a stronger faith and a sense of belonging to the whole Church.
