Give three purposes of marriage in Christian teaching.
Model answer
Christian marriage is for lifelong companionship, for the birth and raising of children, and as the right place for sex. Church wedding services set out these three purposes.
- 3
Which biblical text describes a married couple as one flesh?
Model answer
Genesis 2:24 says that a man leaves his father and mother, is united to his wife, and the two become one flesh. Christians use the verse to argue that marriage joins two lives into one.
- 4
What did Jesus teach about the permanence of marriage?
Model answer
Mark 10:9 records Jesus saying that what God has joined together, no one should separate. Christians use the verse to argue that marriage is meant to last for life.

Why do Roman Catholics call marriage a sacrament?
Model answer
Catholic teaching holds that marriage is one of the seven sacraments, an outward sign of God's grace. The couple make their vows before God and before the Church.
- 6
What is a marriage vow?
Model answer
A marriage vow is a solemn promise made by each partner during the wedding. Christian vows promise faithfulness for better or worse until death.
