Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define sacrament.
Model answer
A sacrament is an outward sign of inward grace, instituted by Christ. Catholics believe a sacrament actually gives the grace it signifies.
- 2
What is meant by the sacramental nature of reality?
Model answer
Catholics teach that the created world can reveal God and carry his grace. Ordinary things such as water, bread, oil and touch become channels of God's presence.
- 3
How many sacraments does the Catholic Church recognise, and how are they grouped?
Model answer
The Church recognises seven sacraments in three groups. Initiation covers baptism, confirmation and the eucharist, healing covers reconciliation and anointing, and service covers matrimony and holy orders.
- 4
Name the three sacraments of initiation.
Model answer
The sacraments of initiation are baptism, confirmation and the eucharist. The three together make a person a full member of the Church.
- 5
What does baptism do, according to Catholic teaching?
Model answer
Baptism washes away original sin and makes a person a child of God. Baptism also gives sanctifying grace and membership of the Church.
- 6
Describe what happens at a Catholic infant baptism.
Model answer
The priest pours water three times over the head of the child using the Trinitarian formula. Parents and godparents promise to bring the child up in the faith.
