Forgiveness
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Students learn forgiveness in Jesus' teaching, the Lord's Prayer and the words from the cross, whether forgiveness cancels punishment, repentance, God's forgiveness in Islam, contrasting Christian and Muslim beliefs, and humanist views.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How many times did Jesus tell Peter to forgive?
Which line of the Lord's Prayer is about forgiveness?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define forgiveness.
Model answer
Forgiveness means letting go of the desire to punish someone for the wrong they have done. Forgiveness does not always mean that a punishment is cancelled.
- 2
How many times did Jesus tell Peter to forgive?
Model answer
Jesus answered 'seventy-seven times', which some translations render as 'seventy times seven' (Matthew 18:22). The number stands for forgiveness without limit.
- 3
Which line of the Lord's Prayer is about forgiveness?
Model answer
The Lord's Prayer asks God to forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us (Luke 11:4). Christians who pray those words accept a duty to forgive.
- 4
What did Jesus say from the cross about those who crucified him?
Model answer
Jesus prayed 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing' (Luke 23:34). Several early manuscripts leave the verse out, so some Bibles print it with a note.
- 5
Why is forgiveness difficult for victims of serious crime?
Model answer
Forgiveness can feel like excusing the offender or betraying the person who was harmed. Many victims need years before forgiveness becomes possible, and some never reach it.
- 6
Does forgiveness mean that a criminal escapes punishment?
Model answer
Forgiveness deals with the relationship between the people involved, not with the sentence of a court. Most Christians hold that a forgiven offender should still face justice.
