- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
The subtopic covers the commission in Mark 16:15 and the signs promised, the disputed longer ending, what the authority of Jesus' teaching means, and the secular challenges to that authority with Christian answers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the commission in Mark 16:15?
How does Mark's longer ending finish?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the commission in Mark 16:15?
Model answer
Jesus told the disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Belief and baptism are named as the way of salvation.
- 2
What signs are promised in Mark 16:17-18?
Model answer
The passage promises that believers will drive out demons, speak in new tongues and pick up snakes. Believers are also promised protection from poison and the power to heal the sick. Very few churches take the snake and poison sayings literally.
- 3
How does Mark's longer ending finish?
Model answer
Jesus is taken up into heaven and sits at the right hand of God. The disciples go out and preach, and the Lord works with them, confirming his word by signs.
- 4
Why is Mark's longer ending textually disputed?
Model answer
Verses 9 to 20 are missing from the oldest surviving manuscripts, which stop at 16:8. Most scholars judge the longer ending a later addition, though most Bibles still print it.
- 5
Does the dispute matter for Christian belief?
Model answer
The resurrection is attested elsewhere in the New Testament, so the doctrine does not rest on these verses. Some Christians nonetheless treat the whole received text as scripture.
- 6
Why is Jesus' attitude to the excluded important to Christians?
Model answer
Jesus consistently crossed the boundaries his society drew around illness, occupation and ethnicity. Christians take that pattern as binding on how the church treats people now.
