- 3 things to know

Which surah of the Qur'an is the clearest statement of tawhid?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the term tawhid mean?
Model answer
Tawhid means the absolute oneness of God. Muslims believe there is only one God, Allah, with no partners and no equal.
- 2
Which surah of the Qur'an is the clearest statement of tawhid?
Model answer
Surah 112, al-Ikhlas, states the oneness of God. The four short verses deny that God has any offspring or equal.
- 3
Give the meaning of the opening words of Surah 112.
Model answer
Surah 112 opens by telling the Prophet to say that God is One. The declaration rules out any partner beside God.
- 4
What is shirk?
Model answer
Shirk means associating any partner or equal with God. Muslims regard shirk as the gravest of all sins.
- 5
Why do Muslims treat shirk so seriously?
Model answer
Shirk denies the one truth on which Islam rests. Qur'an 4:48 teaches that God forgives every sin except unrepented shirk.
- 6
Name the six articles of faith in Sunni Islam.
Model answer
The six articles are tawhid, angels, holy books, prophets, the Day of Judgement and predestination. Sunni Muslims treat all six as essential belief.
