- 4
Why was Plymouth important at the start of the campaign?
Model answer
The main English fleet was based at Plymouth. It got out of the harbour and upwind of the Armada, so it could attack from behind as the Spanish sailed up the Channel.
- 5
What happened when the Armada anchored at Calais?
Model answer
The Armada anchored off Calais to wait for the Duke of Parma's army, which was not ready. On the night of 7–8 August (new style) the English sent fireships among the anchored fleet, and the Spanish cut their cables and scattered.
- 6
What happened at the Battle of Gravelines?
Model answer
On 8 August 1588 the English attacked the scattered Armada off Gravelines. Their faster ships and better guns caused heavy damage, and a change in the wind drove the Spanish into the North Sea, away from Parma.
