  1. 1

    Who were the Huguenots?

    Model answer

French Protestants who followed Calvin’s teaching and lived as a distrusted minority in Catholic France.

  2. 2

What drove the Huguenots out of France?

    Model answer

Louis XIV cancelled the Edict of Nantes in 1685, stripping them of the right to worship, so many thousands fled abroad and large numbers reached Britain.

  3. 3

    What were the Highland clearances?

    Model answer

The eviction of tenant families from the Scottish Highlands by their landlords, from the later eighteenth century into the nineteenth, to make room for sheep.

  4. 4

Why did landowners clear their estates?

    Model answer

Sheep and later sporting estates paid far more rent than crofting tenants could, and after 1746 the old bond between chief and clansman no longer restrained the owners.

  5. 5

What became of the people who were cleared?

    Model answer

Some were resettled on poor coastal crofts to burn kelp or fish, while many went to the Lowland cities or emigrated to Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

  6. 6

    What were the Ulster plantations?

    Model answer

The settling of confiscated land in the north of Ireland with Protestant colonists from England and Scotland, organised by the crown from 1609.
