  5. 5

Describe the structure of the White Tower.

    Model answer

A huge rectangular keep about 27 metres high, with walls up to about 4.5 metres thick at the base and corner turrets. It was built mainly of Kentish ragstone, with fine Caen stone shipped from Normandy for the details.

  6. 6

Why was the entrance to the White Tower at first-floor level?

    Model answer

An entrance raised above the ground, reached by an external wooden stair that could be removed or defended, made the keep much harder to storm.
