Aerobic Training
Adaptations to aerobic training
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Cardiac hypertrophy, stroke volume and resting heart rate, blood volume and capillarisation, blood pressure, respiratory adaptations, mitochondria and myoglobin, fibre changes, greater fat use, delayed OBLA and insulin sensitivity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does aerobic training change stroke volume and resting heart rate?
How does aerobic training change heart rate during submaximal exercise?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define cardiac hypertrophy.
Model answer
Cardiac hypertrophy is an increase in the size and wall thickness of the heart, especially the left ventricle. The heart contracts more forcefully.
- 2
How does aerobic training change stroke volume and resting heart rate?
Model answer
Stroke volume increases at rest and during exercise. Resting heart rate falls, sometimes below 60 bpm, which is called bradycardia.
- 3
How does aerobic training change heart rate during submaximal exercise?
Model answer
Heart rate at any given submaximal workload is lower after training. A larger stroke volume delivers the same cardiac output with fewer beats.
- 4
How does aerobic training change the blood?
Model answer
Blood plasma volume increases, and so do red blood cell numbers and haemoglobin. Oxygen transport to the muscles improves.
- 5
What is capillarisation, and why does it help an endurance athlete?
Model answer
Capillarisation is the growth of new capillaries around muscle fibres and alveoli. More capillaries improve oxygen delivery and the removal of carbon dioxide and lactate.
- 6
How does aerobic training affect blood pressure?
Model answer
Regular aerobic training lowers resting blood pressure. Arterial walls become more elastic, reducing resistance to blood flow.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Aerobic Training, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
