Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a simple fracture?
Model answer
A simple fracture is a clean break in the bone in which the skin is not broken. A simple fracture is also called a closed fracture.
- 2
How is a simple fracture treated?
Model answer
The bone is realigned if necessary and immobilised in a cast or splint. Physiotherapy restores strength and movement once the bone has healed.
- 3
What is a stress fracture, and where does it commonly occur?
Model answer
A stress fracture is a tiny crack in a bone caused by repeated loading. Stress fractures are common in the metatarsals and tibia of runners.
- 4
How is a stress fracture treated?
Model answer
Treatment is rest from impact activity, sometimes with a protective boot. Training then resumes gradually, and the cause, such as footwear or load, is corrected.
- 5
What is a dislocation?
Model answer
A dislocation is when the bones of a joint are forced out of their normal position. A shoulder dislocation in a rugby tackle is an example.
- 6
How is a dislocation treated?
Model answer
A medical professional relocates the joint, and it is immobilised in a sling or brace. Physiotherapy then strengthens the surrounding muscles to stabilise the joint.
