Fluid Mechanics and Projectile Motion
Bernoulli's principle and lift
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Bernoulli's principle and lift force, the angle of attack, the discus, javelin and ski jumper's V position, and downward lift from an F1 car's rear wing and track cycling equipment.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is lift force?
How does Bernoulli's principle create an upward lift force on a projectile?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State Bernoulli's principle.
Model answer
Bernoulli's principle states that the faster air flows past a surface, the lower the pressure it exerts on that surface.
- 2
What is lift force?
Model answer
Lift is a force that acts at right angles to the direction of motion. Lift results from a pressure difference between two surfaces of a projectile.
- 3
How does Bernoulli's principle create an upward lift force on a projectile?
Model answer
Air flowing over the curved upper surface travels further and faster than air flowing underneath. Lower pressure above and higher pressure below push the projectile upwards.
- 4
What is the angle of attack?
Model answer
The angle of attack is the angle at which a projectile is tilted relative to the airflow. The angle of attack determines how much lift is generated.
- 5
How does a discus generate lift?
Model answer
The discus is released tilted at an angle of attack, so it acts like an aerofoil. Air flows further and faster over the top, lowering the pressure above the discus.
- 6
Why does lift increase the horizontal distance of a discus throw?
Model answer
Lift keeps the discus in the air for longer. A longer flight time gives a greater horizontal distance.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Fluid Mechanics and Projectile Motion, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
