The Cardiovascular System
Cardiac responses to exercise and recovery
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
The anticipatory rise, heart rate in submaximal and maximal exercise and recovery, estimated maximum heart rate, the stroke volume plateau, Starling's law, trained and untrained maximal cardiac output, and worked calculations for a runner and a cyclist.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does heart rate rise before exercise begins?
Describe how heart rate responds to submaximal exercise.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does heart rate rise before exercise begins?
Model answer
Anticipation causes adrenaline to be released before exercise starts. Adrenaline acts on the SA node to raise heart rate, which is called the anticipatory rise.
- 2
Describe how heart rate responds to submaximal exercise.
Model answer
Heart rate rises rapidly at the start of submaximal exercise. Heart rate then levels off at a steady state where oxygen supply meets demand.
- 3
Describe how heart rate responds to maximal exercise.
Model answer
Heart rate rises rapidly and keeps climbing throughout maximal exercise. Heart rate approaches the performer's maximum and does not reach a steady state.
- 4
Describe how heart rate changes during recovery.
Model answer
Heart rate falls rapidly at first once exercise stops. Heart rate then falls more slowly towards resting levels, staying raised while recovery continues.
- 5
Calculate the estimated maximum heart rate of a 17-year-old.
Model answer
The estimated maximum heart rate is 203 bpm. Maximum heart rate = 220 − age = 220 − 17 = 203 bpm.
- 6
How does stroke volume respond as exercise intensity increases?
Model answer
Stroke volume rises as intensity increases, up to about 40–60% of maximal intensity. Stroke volume then plateaus as the heart has less time to fill.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Cardiovascular System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
