EPOC and the recovery process
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
EPOC and the oxygen deficit, the fast component restoring phosphocreatine and myoglobin oxygen stores, the slow component with elevated circulation, ventilation and body temperature and lactate removal, active recovery and planning rest periods.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is EPOC?
What is the oxygen deficit, and how does it relate to EPOC?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is EPOC?
Model answer
EPOC is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. EPOC is the volume of oxygen consumed after exercise, above resting levels, to return the body to its pre-exercise state.
- 2
What is the oxygen deficit, and how does it relate to EPOC?
Model answer
The oxygen deficit is the shortfall between oxygen required and oxygen supplied at the start of exercise. EPOC repays the deficit and covers the other costs of recovery.
- 3
Name the two processes of the fast component of EPOC.
Model answer
The fast component replenishes blood and muscle oxygen stores. The fast component also resynthesises ATP and phosphocreatine.
- 4
How long do the fast and slow components of EPOC last?
Model answer
The fast component is completed within about 3 minutes of stopping exercise. The slow component lasts far longer, and lactate removal alone can take an hour or more.
- 5
How quickly are phosphocreatine stores restored after maximal exercise?
Model answer
About 50% of phosphocreatine is restored within 30 seconds. Stores are almost fully restored within about 3 minutes.
- 6
How are the oxygen stores in the muscles replenished after exercise?
Model answer
Oxygen from the blood re-saturates the myoglobin in the muscles. Blood and muscle oxygen stores are restored within about two minutes.
