Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is a plane of movement?

    Model answer

A plane of movement is an imaginary flat surface running through the body. Movements are described as taking place in, or parallel to, a plane.

  2. 2

How does the sagittal plane divide the body, and which movements occur in it?

    Model answer

The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right sides. Flexion, extension, dorsiflexion and plantar flexion occur in the sagittal plane.

  3. 3

How does the frontal plane divide the body, and which movements occur in it?

    Model answer

The frontal plane divides the body into front and back halves. Abduction and adduction occur in the frontal plane.

  4. 4

How does the transverse plane divide the body, and which movements occur in it?

    Model answer

The transverse plane divides the body into upper and lower halves. Medial and lateral rotation, and horizontal flexion and extension, occur in the transverse plane.

  5. 5

In which plane does a sprinter's leg action mainly take place?

    Model answer

A sprinter's leg action takes place mainly in the sagittal plane. The hip and knee flex and extend while the ankle dorsiflexes and plantar flexes.

  6. 6

In which plane does a star jump take place?

    Model answer

A star jump takes place in the frontal plane. The shoulders and hips abduct and then adduct.
