Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is persuasive communication?
Model answer
Persuasive communication is an attempt to change an attitude by convincing a person with a message. Success depends on the persuader, the message, the recipient and the situation.
- 2
What makes a persuader effective?
Model answer
An effective persuader is a significant other who is respected, knowledgeable and trusted. An elite performer or a popular coach is more persuasive than a stranger.
- 3
What makes a persuasive message effective?
Model answer
The message should be clear, accurate and presented in an interesting way. A balanced message giving both sides can be more convincing than a one-sided one.
- 4
Why does the recipient matter in persuasive communication?
Model answer
A recipient who is willing to listen and not strongly committed to the old attitude is easier to persuade. A well-informed recipient is more likely to need reasoned evidence.
- 5
How does the situation affect persuasive communication?
Model answer
A message is more persuasive when there are no conflicting messages and the setting is positive. A message given to a group gains strength when others in the group agree with it.
- 6
Give an example of persuasive communication in sport.
Model answer
A respected coach explains to a reluctant player how weight training will improve their sprinting. Evidence and a demonstration make the message more convincing.
