Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is positive self-talk?
Model answer
Positive self-talk is the use of encouraging words or phrases inside one's own head. A runner might silently repeat the words ‘stay strong’ during a hard race.
- 2
How does positive self-talk reduce stress?
Model answer
Positive self-talk replaces negative thoughts with helpful ones. The performer feels more confident and less anxious.
- 3
Give an example of positive self-talk that a tennis player could use before serving.
Model answer
The player could repeat a short cue such as ‘smooth toss, strong serve’. The phrase focuses attention on technique rather than on worry.
- 4
Distinguish between instructional and motivational self-talk.
Model answer
Instructional self-talk uses cue words about technique, such as ‘follow through’. Motivational self-talk uses words that raise effort and belief.
- 5
What is negative thought stopping?
Model answer
Negative thought stopping is cutting off a negative thought the moment it appears. A trigger word or action, such as saying ‘stop’, interrupts the thought.
- 6
How is negative thought stopping usually combined with positive self-talk?
Model answer
The negative thought is first interrupted with a trigger. A positive statement then takes its place.
