Linear and Angular Motion
Moment of inertia and conservation of angular momentum
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Moment of inertia and the mass and its distribution, the sprinter's recovery leg, angular momentum, worked diver calculations, conservation of angular momentum in skaters, divers and trampolinists, and tucked against piked somersaults.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how the graphs of moment of inertia, angular velocity and angular momentum change as a diver tucks and then opens out.
Define moment of inertia and give its unit.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define moment of inertia and give its unit.
Model answer
Moment of inertia is the resistance of a body to a change in its state of angular motion. Moment of inertia is measured in kg m².
- 2
Which two factors decide the size of a rotating body's moment of inertia?
Model answer
The mass of the body or body part affects moment of inertia. How far that mass is spread from the axis of rotation also affects it.
- 3
How does mass affect moment of inertia?
Model answer
A greater mass gives a greater moment of inertia. A heavier gymnast is harder to start rotating and harder to stop.
- 4
How does the distribution of mass affect moment of inertia?
Model answer
Mass spread further from the axis of rotation increases moment of inertia. Mass tucked close to the axis reduces moment of inertia.
- 5
Why does a sprinter bend the recovery leg sharply at the knee?
Model answer
A tightly flexed knee brings the leg's mass closer to the hip, lowering its moment of inertia. The leg can then swing forward faster.
- 6
How are moment of inertia and angular velocity related?
Model answer
Moment of inertia and angular velocity are inversely proportional when angular momentum is constant. A decrease in moment of inertia increases angular velocity.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Linear and Angular Motion, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
