Memory Models
Craik and Lockhart's levels of processing
- 3 things to know
- Component 02
Overview
Shallow and deep processing, the structural, phonetic and semantic levels, understanding a skill's purpose, the hockey coach's explanation, imagery and stories, and comparison with the multi-store model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Who proposed the levels of processing model, and when?
What is the central idea of the levels of processing model?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who proposed the levels of processing model, and when?
Model answer
Fergus Craik and Robert Lockhart proposed the levels of processing model in 1972. The model rejects the idea of separate memory stores.
- 2
What is the central idea of the levels of processing model?
Model answer
How well information is remembered depends on how deeply it is processed. Deeper processing produces a stronger, longer-lasting memory.
- 3
What is shallow processing?
Model answer
Shallow processing attends only to surface features, such as what a movement looks like or sounds like. Shallowly processed information is quickly forgotten.
- 4
Name the three levels of processing, from shallowest to deepest.
Model answer
The three levels are structural, phonetic and semantic processing. Structural processing concerns appearance, phonetic processing concerns sound and semantic processing concerns meaning.
- 5
What is semantic processing?
Model answer
Semantic processing attaches meaning to information, linking it to what is already known. Semantic processing is the deepest level and gives the strongest recall.
- 6
How can a coach encourage deep processing of a new skill?
Model answer
A coach can explain why the skill is performed the way it is. Questions about the skill also make the learner think about its meaning.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Memory Models, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
