Atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Atherosclerosis and its risk factors, HDL and LDL cholesterol, coronary heart disease and angina, how aerobic training protects the arteries and heart, blood clots and body weight.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What factors increase the risk of atherosclerosis?
Explain how atherosclerosis affects blood flow.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define atherosclerosis.
Model answer
Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fatty deposits, called plaque or atheroma, in the walls of arteries. The arteries narrow and harden.
- 2
What factors increase the risk of atherosclerosis?
Model answer
High LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking all increase the risk. Physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes also contribute.
- 3
Explain how atherosclerosis affects blood flow.
Model answer
Plaque narrows the lumen of the artery and makes the wall less elastic. Resistance rises, so blood flow falls and blood pressure increases.
- 4
What is the difference between HDL and LDL cholesterol?
Model answer
LDL cholesterol carries cholesterol to the tissues and can deposit it in artery walls. HDL cholesterol carries cholesterol away to the liver for removal.
- 5
How does regular aerobic training change blood cholesterol?
Model answer
Regular aerobic training raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol. Less plaque is deposited, so the risk of atherosclerosis falls.
- 6
How does training help keep arteries healthy?
Model answer
Regular training keeps arterial walls elastic and lowers resting blood pressure. Lower pressure causes less damage to the artery lining where plaque starts.
