Forces and free body diagrams
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Net force, balanced and unbalanced forces, weight, reaction, friction and its factors, sprint spikes and curling, air resistance and headwinds, and free body diagrams of a sprinter accelerating, running steadily and slowing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is net force?
What happens to a body's motion when the forces acting on it are balanced?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is net force?
Model answer
Net force is the sum of all the forces acting on a body. Net force is also called the resultant force.
- 2
What happens to a body's motion when the forces acting on it are balanced?
Model answer
Balanced forces give a net force of zero. The body stays at rest or keeps moving at constant velocity.
- 3
What happens to a body's motion when the forces acting on it are unbalanced?
Model answer
Unbalanced forces produce a net force. The body accelerates or decelerates in the direction of the net force.
- 4
Define weight.
Model answer
Weight is the gravitational pull of the Earth on a body. Weight acts downwards from the centre of mass.
- 5
What is reaction force?
Model answer
Reaction is the equal and opposite force a surface exerts when a body pushes against it. Reaction acts from the point of contact.
- 6
Define friction and state its direction for a running sprinter.
Model answer
Friction is a force that opposes the slipping or sliding of two surfaces in contact. Friction acts forwards at the sprinter's foot, opposing the backward push of the foot.

Every question in Biomechanical Principles and Levers, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
