- 3 things to know
- Component 1

What is dāna?
Why is dāna placed first in Buddhist training?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is dāna?
Model answer
Dāna is generosity or giving, the first of the perfections and the first practice taught to lay people. Food, robes, medicine and shelter for monastics are the classic gifts.
- 2
Why is dāna placed first in Buddhist training?
Model answer
Giving loosens attachment, which is the root problem the whole path addresses. Generosity also creates the goodwill in which ethics and meditation can develop.
- 3
What makes a gift more valuable in Buddhist teaching?
Model answer
Intention before, during and after the gift decides its value, and regret afterwards diminishes it. The character of the giver and of the recipient also counts.
- 4
What can be given besides money?
Model answer
Time, skill, teaching, protection and forgiveness all count as dāna. The gift of dhamma is described as the highest gift of all.
- 5
How does dāna work between the laity and monastics?
Model answer
Lay Buddhists offer the daily alms meal and material support. Monastics respond with teaching, blessings and the example of a trained life.
- 6
What is puñña?
Model answer
Puñña is merit, the wholesome force accumulated by good actions, words and thoughts. Merit conditions happiness in this life and in future rebirths.
