  1. 1

Why is meditation central to Buddhism?

    Model answer

Meditation is the third of the trainings and the means by which insight is developed. Ethics prepares the mind and wisdom completes it, but concentration and insight are cultivated in meditation.

  2. 2

    What is samatha meditation?

    Model answer

Samatha is calm-abiding meditation, which steadies and unifies the mind. Ānāpānasati, mindfulness of breathing, is the usual object.

  3. 3

    What are the jhānas?

    Model answer

The jhānas are progressively deeper states of absorption reached through samatha. Distraction, joy and even bliss drop away as the practitioner moves through them.

  4. 4

    What is vipassanā meditation?

    Model answer

Vipassanā is insight meditation, the clear seeing of experience as it actually is. The three marks, dukkha, anicca and anattā, are what the practitioner comes to see directly.

  5. 5

How do samatha and vipassanā relate to each other?

    Model answer

Samatha steadies the mind so that vipassanā can look closely without distraction. Theravāda tradition usually treats the two as a pair rather than as alternatives.

  6. 6

What is the body scan in insight practice?

    Model answer

A practitioner moves attention slowly through the body, noticing sensation without reacting to it. Change in every sensation makes anicca directly observable.
