Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is Zionism?

    Model answer

Zionism is the movement for Jewish national return to and self-determination in the Land of Israel. Religious, political, labour and cultural forms of Zionism developed alongside one another.

  2. 2

    What is Religious Zionism?

    Model answer

Religious Zionism treats return to the Land as part of God's promise and of redemption. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook taught that even secular settlement could serve a divine purpose.

  3. 3

What biblical basis do Religious Zionists give for return to the Land?

    Model answer

Amos 9:14-15 promises that God will plant Israel on their own land, never to be uprooted again. Zion theology in Psalms 46, 48 and 132 presents Jerusalem as the place God has chosen to dwell.

  4. 4

Why did nationalism rise among European Jews in the nineteenth century?

    Model answer

Emancipation had not ended prejudice, and pogroms in the Russian Empire drove mass emigration after 1881. European nationalism supplied the model of a people needing its own state.

  5. 5

    What was the Dreyfus affair?

    Model answer

Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was wrongly convicted of treason in 1894. Open antisemitism during the case convinced many Jews that assimilation offered no protection.

  6. 6

    Who was Theodor Herzl?

    Model answer

Theodor Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian journalist who founded political Zionism. Herzl's 1896 pamphlet Der Judenstaat argued that only a Jewish state could end antisemitism.
