Tawhid means the oneness and unity of God, the central doctrine of Islam. God is one in essence, in attributes and in the sole right to be worshipped.
- 2
What does Sura 112 say about God?
Model answer
Sura 112 declares that God is one, eternal and self-sufficient. God neither begets nor is begotten, and nothing is comparable to him.
- 3
How does the Qur'an present God as sole creator?
Model answer
God is named the originator of the heavens and the earth, who says Be and it is. Creation belongs to God alone, and no creature shares in the act.
- 4
How can God be both omnipotent and merciful?
Model answer
Every sura but one opens by naming God the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Power and mercy are held together, because God's mercy is exercised freely by his own will.
- 5
Why do Muslims say God is beyond words and description?
Model answer
Human language is drawn from created things and so cannot capture the uncreated. Sura 42:11 states that there is nothing whatever like unto him.
- 6
How are the attributes of God understood in Islam?
Model answer
The ninety-nine beautiful names describe God as merciful, just, all-seeing and all-powerful. Many theologians treat expressions such as God's hand as metaphor rather than physical description.
