Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did Siddhattha do after leaving home?

    Model answer

Siddhattha studied formless meditation with Āḷāra Kālāma and Uddaka Rāmaputta and mastered their attainments. Neither teacher offered an end to dukkha, so he left them.

  2. 2

Why did the Buddha abandon extreme asceticism?

    Model answer

Six years of severe fasting brought him near death without bringing insight. Starvation weakened the mind that meditation needs, so he accepted milk-rice from Sujātā.

  3. 3

What is the Middle Way in the awakening narrative?

    Model answer

The Middle Way is the path between indulgence in pleasure and self-torture. Memory of a calm meditative state under a rose-apple tree in childhood suggested it.

  4. 4

Where did the Buddha sit to gain awakening?

    Model answer

Siddhattha sat under a pipal tree at Bodh Gayā, later called the Bodhi tree. The resolve was not to rise from that seat until awakening was reached.

  5. 5

    What is the Māra narrative?

    Model answer

Māra, the personification of death and craving, attacked the Buddha with armies, storms and temptations. Māra's daughters, named as craving, aversion and delight, tried and failed to distract him.

  6. 6

    What is the earth-touching mudrā?

    Model answer

Māra challenged the Buddha's right to the seat of awakening, and the Buddha touched the ground with his right hand. The earth bore witness to his accumulated merit, and Māra withdrew.
