Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Talmud?
Model answer
The Talmud is the central rabbinic work recording the Oral Torah and its discussion. Two layers make it up, the Mishnah and the Gemara.
- 2
What is the Mishnah?
Model answer
The Mishnah is the earliest written collection of the Oral Torah, arranged by subject. Rabbi Judah haNasi compiled it in the Land of Israel around 200 CE.
- 3
How is the Mishnah organised?
Model answer
Six orders, called sedarim, cover agriculture, festivals, women, damages, holy things and purity. Each order contains tractates, chapters and short numbered rulings.
- 4
Describe the style of the Mishnah.
Model answer
The Mishnah is written in terse Hebrew and states rulings without giving scriptural proof. Minority opinions are preserved alongside the accepted ruling.
- 5
Why are minority opinions preserved in the Mishnah?
Model answer
Rabbinic tradition holds that a rejected view may one day be needed. Preserving dissent also shows students how a ruling was reached.
- 6
What is the Gemara?
Model answer
The Gemara is the later rabbinic commentary and debate on the Mishnah. Discussion moves through objections, proofs and test cases rather than simple explanation.
