Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When is Ashura observed?
Model answer
Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year. Sunni and Shi'a Muslims both mark the date, but for different reasons.
- 2
Why do Sunni Muslims observe Ashura?
Model answer
Sunni Muslims fast on Ashura in thanksgiving for God's deliverance of Musa and the Israelites. The Prophet is reported to have kept the fast and recommended it.
- 3
Why do Shi'a Muslims observe Ashura?
Model answer
Shi'a Muslims commemorate the killing of Husayn, grandson of the Prophet, at Karbala in 680 CE. Ashura is kept as a day of mourning rather than of thanksgiving.
- 4
What happened at Karbala?
Model answer
Husayn refused allegiance to the Umayyad caliph Yazid and was intercepted with about seventy companions. The whole party was killed and the survivors were taken captive.
- 5
Why does Karbala carry such weight in Shi'a identity?
Model answer
Husayn is remembered as choosing death rather than submission to an unjust ruler. Resistance to tyranny becomes a religious duty modelled on his stand.
- 6
What rituals mark Ashura in Shi'a communities?
Model answer
Gatherings called majalis retell the events, and processions carry banners and replicas of Husayn's shrine. Passion plays known as ta'ziyah dramatise the martyrdom.
