- 3 things to know
- Component 1

What is the Heart Sūtra?
What does the Heart Sūtra say about form and emptiness?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Heart Sūtra?
Model answer
The Heart Sūtra is a very short Mahāyāna text distilling the Perfection of Wisdom literature. The bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara addresses the monk Śāriputra in it.
- 2
What does the Heart Sūtra say about form and emptiness?
Model answer
The Heart Sūtra states that form is emptiness and emptiness is form. The same identity is then applied to feeling, perception, mental formations and consciousness.
- 3
What does śūnyatā mean?
Model answer
Śūnyatā means emptiness, the absence of independent or inherent existence in anything. Emptiness is not nothingness, because things do exist dependently.
- 4
How does śūnyatā relate to dependent origination?
Model answer
All things arise in dependence on conditions, so nothing carries an essence of its own. Emptiness is therefore another way of stating dependent origination.
- 5
Why does the Heart Sūtra negate the traditional lists?
Model answer
The sūtra denies the senses, the aggregates, the Four Noble Truths and even attainment itself. Negation shows that the earlier categories are themselves empty and not to be clung to.
- 6
What is the mantra at the end of the Heart Sūtra?
Model answer
The sūtra closes with the mantra gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā. The words are usually rendered as gone, gone, gone beyond, gone altogether beyond, awakening, so be it.
