What is prakṛti?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What kind of philosophy is classical Sāṃkhya?
Model answer
Classical Sāṃkhya is a dualist and non-theistic analysis of reality. Two ultimate categories are recognised, puruṣa and prakṛti.
- 2
What is puruṣa in Sāṃkhya?
Model answer
Puruṣa is pure consciousness, inactive and unchanging. Many puruṣas exist, one for each living being.
- 3
What is prakṛti?
Model answer
Prakṛti is unconscious primordial matter out of which the world evolves. Intellect, ego, mind, senses and elements all unfold from it.
- 4
How does Sāṃkhya explain bondage and liberation?
Model answer
Bondage is the mistaken identification of puruṣa with the activity of prakṛti. Liberation is the discriminating knowledge that separates the two again.
- 5
Name the three guṇas and state what each contributes.
Model answer
Sattva brings clarity, rajas brings energy and passion, and tamas brings inertia. Every material thing mixes the three in some proportion.
- 6
Where does the triad of Īśvara, prakṛti and ātman actually come from?
Model answer
The Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad speaks of a threefold Brahman: the enjoyer, the enjoyed and the mover. Classical Sāṃkhya itself recognises no Brahman and no God.
