- 1
Name the eight factors of the Noble Eightfold Path.
Model answer
The eight are right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. Each is called sammā, meaning right or complete.
- 2
What are the Threefold Trainings?
Model answer
The three trainings are paññā or wisdom, sīla or morality, and samādhi or meditation. The eight factors of the path divide among them.
- 3
Which path factors belong to wisdom?
Model answer
Right view and right intention belong to paññā. Correct understanding of the Four Noble Truths comes first, followed by intention towards renunciation and non-harming.
- 4
Which path factors belong to morality?
Model answer
Right speech, right action and right livelihood make up sīla. Truthful speech, non-harming conduct and an honest occupation are required.

Which path factors belong to meditation?
Model answer
Right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration make up samādhi. Effort guards the mind, mindfulness watches experience, and concentration steadies attention.
- 6
What is right speech in practice?
Model answer
Right speech avoids lying, divisive talk, harsh words and idle chatter. Speech should be true, kind, useful and timely.
