Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a myth in the study of religion?
Model answer
A myth is a story whose purpose is to convey meaning, value and insight rather than record history. Falsehood is not implied by the technical use of the word.
- 2
Why is myth described as a complex form of language?
Model answer
A myth works on several levels at once, carrying narrative, moral teaching and symbolism together. Reduction of a myth to a single literal statement loses most of its content.
- 3
What do creation myths communicate?
Model answer
Creation myths convey the dependence of the world on its creator and the emergence of order from chaos. Genesis 1 and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are standard examples.
- 4
What do myths of good against evil communicate?
Model answer
Stories of that kind present the moral structure of human life as a genuine conflict. Genesis 3 and the dualism of Zoroastrian tradition both work in that way.
- 5
What do heroic myths communicate?
Model answer
Heroic myths present a figure who endures trials and transforms the community. The epic of Gilgamesh and the lives of the saints follow that pattern.
- 6
How do myths help people face the unknown?
Model answer
Death, disaster and the future are placed inside a story that gives them meaning. Fear is contained when the unexplained is given a place in an ordered account.
