How many links are there in dependent origination?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is paṭiccasamuppāda?
Model answer
Paṭiccasamuppāda is dependent origination, the teaching that everything arises in dependence on conditions. The formula runs: when this is, that is, and from the arising of this comes the arising of that.
- 2
How many links are there in dependent origination?
Model answer
Twelve links, the nidānas, run from ignorance to ageing and death. Ignorance conditions the formations, and craving and clinging drive the chain onward.
- 3
Name the first four links of the chain.
Model answer
Ignorance conditions mental formations, and formations condition consciousness. Consciousness conditions name-and-form, which in turn conditions the six sense bases.
- 4
What is the bhavachakra?
Model answer
The bhavachakra is the wheel of life, a Tibetan icon showing saṃsāra held in the jaws of Yama. Six realms fill the wheel and the twelve links form its outer rim.
- 5
What sits at the hub of the wheel of life?
Model answer
A cock, a snake and a pig occupy the hub, standing for greed, hatred and delusion. The three roots keep the whole wheel turning.
- 6
What are the six realms of the bhavachakra?
Model answer
The six realms are those of gods, jealous gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts and hell beings. Human birth is treated as the most favourable for practice.
