Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Who was Jacobus Arminius?

    Model answer

Jacobus Arminius was a Dutch Reformed theologian of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Followers set out the case in the Remonstrance of 1610.

  2. 2

What did Arminius deny in Calvinism?

    Model answer

Arminius denied unconditional election and the claim that grace cannot be resisted. God's choice, in his account, takes human response into account.

  3. 3

    Did Arminius accept original sin?

    Model answer

Arminius accepted that human nature is genuinely corrupted and cannot turn to God unaided. The disagreement with Calvin was about grace, not about depravity.

  4. 4

    Define prevenient grace.

    Model answer

Prevenient grace is the grace that goes before conversion and restores the ability to respond to God. The work of the Holy Spirit enables a choice that sin had made impossible.

  5. 5

Why is prevenient grace central to the Arminian position?

    Model answer

Prevenient grace lets Arminius accept total depravity while still affirming a real human choice. Freedom is restored by grace rather than retained despite sin.

  6. 6

    Define conditional election.

    Model answer

Conditional election is God's choice of those he foresees will believe. Election is grounded in foreseen faith rather than in bare decree.
