- Component 1

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the Pāli Canon called a set of baskets?
When was the Pāli Canon written down?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Tipiṭaka?
Model answer
Tipiṭaka means three baskets, the traditional name of the Pāli Canon. The Vinaya Piṭaka, the Sutta Piṭaka and the Abhidhamma Piṭaka are the three.
- 2
Why is the canon called a set of baskets?
Model answer
Manuscripts written on palm leaf were stored in baskets, which gave the collection its name. The image also suggests material handed on from one generation to the next.
- 3
When was the Pāli Canon written down?
Model answer
The Pāli Canon was committed to writing in Sri Lanka around the first century BCE. Specialist reciters preserved it orally for some four hundred years before that.
- 4
What does the Vinaya Piṭaka contain?
Model answer
The Vinaya Piṭaka contains the monastic rules, their origin stories and the procedures of the sangha. Ordination, uposatha and the settling of disputes are all set out there.
- 5
Why does the Vinaya matter so much to the Theravāda sangha?
Model answer
Valid ordination depends on Vinaya procedure, so the lineage of the sangha rests upon it. The Buddha is recorded as saying that the dhamma and the discipline would be teacher after his death.
- 6
What does the Sutta Piṭaka contain?
Model answer
The Sutta Piṭaka contains the discourses attributed to the Buddha and his leading disciples. Five collections, the Nikāyas, organise them by length and subject.
