Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the four main sources of shari'a in Sunni Islam.
Model answer
The Qur'an, the sunna, qiyas and ijma are the four classical sources. Qur'an and sunna are revealed, while qiyas and ijma are methods of reasoning.
- 2
What is the sunna?
Model answer
Sunna means the clear trodden path, the example of the Prophet in word, deed and silent approval. Muslims follow it because Sura 33:21 calls Muhammad an excellent example.
- 3
How does a hadith differ from the sunna?
Model answer
Sunna is the practice itself, whereas a hadith is a report about that practice. The sunna is known to later generations through the collected hadith.
- 4
What are the two parts of a hadith?
Model answer
A hadith has an isnad, the chain of transmitters, and a matn, the text of the report. Scholars examine both parts before accepting it.
- 5
What did scholars examine in the isnad?
Model answer
Scholars checked whether the chain was unbroken and whether each transmitter was truthful, accurate and pious. Biographical dictionaries were compiled to make those checks possible.
- 6
Name the main categories of hadith by reliability.
Model answer
Hadith are graded sahih meaning sound, hasan meaning good, and da'if meaning weak. A fabricated report is classed as mawdu' and carries no authority at all.
